Canada Day: Happy Dominion Day!

Well here it is a Holiday Monday in Canada. Today is the Canadian national holiday to celebrate the creation of our nation on the northern end of North America.

Canada Day as it is normally called now – or Dominion Day as it began – is the big Canadian party of the summer. If you are lucky me and live near the Canada- USA border, then Canada Day is the warm-up event for 4 days of summer-time fun from July 1st to July 4th. July 4th being the United States Independence Day celebration. Of course that 4-day bash is best enjoyed when Canada falls on a Friday making for an extra special long weekend of enjoyment with a double-header of fireworks on the 1st and 4th.

The name Dominion Day was because when Canada was founded the official names was Dominion of Canada. Until 1982 the name Dominion of Canada was most often used as the official long name when referring to the nation of Canada. In 1982 July 1st was officially re-named from Dominion Day to Canada Day.

Being an old-timer I still like the name Dominion Day, and prefer using that as the designation for the day. SO here is wishing all Canadians a Happy Dominion Day in celebrating Canada Day!

There are No Gay Rights

Did I get your attention with my heading? Yes I said there are no gay rights. I also really and fully believe there are no women’s rights. Not even any black rights. And you guessed it no native rights.

There are also no men’s rights, no christian rights, no left rights, no centre rights, right rights, back rights, or whatever rights. No elder rights, sitting rights or standing rights of any kind. And very specifically no old, white man rights.

There are only Human Rights. We are all equal. It is really that simple. Every adult member of our society should be able to decide which other adult member of society they choose to love. Who and how we create our family circle is up to each of us as individuals. The state has no business in our bedrooms, or any other part of our homes when it involves choices made by capable and consenting adults. If laws are made they must be made to apply equally and fairly and without discrimination to all members of society.

Nor does the state have any right to any part of your body. The government can set consequences for situations when people harm one another. And the government can set rules for how money and property is shared and managed. But the government has no concern with my pound of flesh – with or without the blood included.

Now I realize that while it is that simple – the reality is it is hard to make real. The way we behave in the world is shaped by our thoughts. And the hardest thing in the world is to change the way we think.

Still I would ask this: TRY.

Step back from demanding your own rights just for you. As much as each of us is the centre of our own world, we are but brief parts of the the entire cosmos. Try saying this out loud:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all humans are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Pursue your own happiness and stop stepping on the happiness of others.

June 16th: Happy National Fudge Day (USA)

After discovering it was International Fresh Veggies Day I remembered that the United States of America has many unique holidays and observances. I did a quick search for USA Observances and discovered that while the rest of the world celebrates Fresh Veggies today (along with Fathers Day) in the USA it is National Fudge Day.

I think I have nothing more to say – really you can draw your own conclusions on that one!

June 16th: Happy International Fresh Veggies Day

So you know how the internet is just made for random browsing of clicking from this that and the other thing? I know you don’t do that – ever. However, in my boredom this morning I did just that and guess what today is not just Fathers Day!

NO – it is more than that. It is International Fresh Veggies Day. A day to honour fresh food from the garden. It is spring here in the Northern Hemisphere of the world – and autumn down in the lands of the south. So all farming parts of the world are enjoying the bounty of Mother Earth while celebrating Fathers Day. It is like a mom and pop event today – so nice.

So all you kids in honour of your Dad – today be nice and eat your vegetables! It is good for you. Really it is. I’m a Dad and I just said so is why…
