Someone left a comment on one of my pages about a little girl in Cambridge, Ontario in Canada. She is a 4-year-old who needs a small miracle to keep her heart beating. She is only one little girl among thousands of people that need help. But there is something you can do!
You can possibly help Katie with your stem cells – or perhaps one of the thousands of other people waiting for a match by going to onematch.ca and signing up to be a donor. And by encouraging others to be donors as well.

4 year old Katie Star needs a hero. This 4 year old Cambridge girl is in desperate need of a stem cell donor. Go to onematch.ca for details on how you can help.
4 year old Katie Star Herron is battling cancer for the second time in her young life; and now only the gift of life from a stranger can help her win this fight.
Katie loves to participate in dance, music, gymnastics and art classes. She is a huge fan of all the Disney Princesses and loves having tea parties.
Katie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on August 6th, 2010. After 25 months of intense treatment that included numerous lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspirations, hospital stays, chemotherapy, steroids and 2 to 3 times a week hospital visits, Katie received her last dose of chemo in September 2012.
As the family celebrated the success of her treatment and her remission, Katie began to live a normal childhood. Her hair grew back and she started Junior Kindergarten in September 2013. Katie is a smart, vibrant little girl with an enormous loving heart. When she laughs it is contagious and her smile can light up any room.
On November 6th, 2013 the family’s worst fears were realized. Katie had relapsed – her Leukemia is back. Katie was admitted into Hamilton’s McMaster Children’s Hospital and her parents have not left her side. Mom sleeps at the hospital with Katie, while Dad spends the nights close by at the Ronald McDonald House.
After the last 2 months of aggressive treatment, the family has now been informed that Katie’s only hope for survival is a stem cell transplant. A world wide search for a donor has begun, as Katie’s parents are not a match. Finding a donor is very difficult, so while Katie’s in the hospital fighting for her life, the Cambridge couple is asking the community for help. Every single person who joins the registry could be a match for someone in desperate need of a transplant and help another family out there.
We hope that in sharing Katie’s story it will be the catalyst that gets people out, for our little Katie Star and for the others who are waiting on a stranger to give them the ultimate gift.

If you recall there was a One Match stem Cell registration held in her honour in Cambridge with 777 registrations received. As a result of this clinic a donor was found and she had her transplant of stem cells. Today is very special because Katie is being discharged from Sick Kids Hospital here in Toronto. She will be staying at Ronald McDonald House for a few weeks as she still has many tests and blood work to be done, but being discharged after being in hospital since last November is truly great news. Thought I would update, the event registered 777 people. My wife and I started volubteering at 1:00pm and in the blink of an eye it was 5:00pm. Thank you for your write up about the event.

The onematch.ca program is very interesting because they are trying to build a large genetic database for matching potential donors to recipients. I am sure there is something similar in the US.

Just curious why it says with the original story… male heroes 17-35 ?? Does that mean that’s who they’re looking for donors in that age and male… or ? Diane

Yes the best donors for stem cells are males between the ages of 17 and 35. However they will consider anyone who is healthy – especially if they come from a unique or smaller genetic pool.
