Poem: December First

cold darkness falls
wrapping herself
around corners
over my heart.
I am unmoved
by christmas lights
and loud carols
ho-ho-hoing

I grumbling,
‘it is too soon
for both nightfall
and yuletide joy…’

yet in this mad
strange convergence
of hope and gloom
co-mingling,
jing-jingling,
I feel alive
as the stars dance
a bit brighter.

there is perhaps
lingering hope
even for old
curmudgeons.
