Poem: February First

I read your words
and felt the razor
slice
down
across
inside
removing my skin
in tidy strips
rolled
formed
salted
cured
you used it
as parchment
writing love
in tiny letters
too small to read

I thanked you
for your thoughtful
gentle kindness
and next
kinder still
you removed my eyes
so I wouldn’t see
the monster
that is me.

You are the best
part of my life.
